Will Kassie DePaiva Succeed as Eve Donovan on 'Days of our Lives'?

Kassie DePaiva
Kassie DePaiva
Emmy-nominated actress Kasssie DePaiva has been starring in soap operas since she joined the cast of CBS' Guiding Light in 1986 as Chelsea Reardon. She became a daytime superstar in 1991 when she took over the role of Blair Kramer, a character previous portrayed by an Asian actress. She stayed on the show until the end of its ABC run in 2012, continued the character on sister soap General Hospital, and reprised the role in Prospect Park's online reboot of One Life to Live in 2013. On June 18, DePaiva brings her talents to NBC's Days of our Lives in the role of Eve Donovan, a character previously played by Charlotte Ross from 1987-1991. Ross was in talks to play Eve again but the timing did not work out with her schedule so the show needed a strong actress to take the part. On paper, and based on Eve's first run in fictional Salem, the character did not seem like a logical fit for DePaiva. Was this a case of casting a "name" actor over finding just the right person? Or is DePaiva the perfect actress to play who Eve is in 2014? Fans have been discussing this since the casting was announced in January. Daytime soaps have become notorious for miscasting stars from other shows onto new series, despite the fact the character/actor combo did not pass the smell test (Maura West as Diane on The Young and the Restless comes to mind - right actor, wrong part).

Here's what we know about Eve:

Dawson's Creek and As the World Turns alum Kerr Smith will recur in Season 2 of The Fosters.

At the end of Season 1 of The Fosters, Callie and her younger brother, Jude, were about to be adopted by Stef and Lena and join their expansive family. When the show returns to ABC Family for Season 2, we'll meet the man Callie only knows as Robert Quinn (Smith), the man standing between Callie and her official adoption by the Foster clan.

The Fosters returns to ABC Family on June 16.

David Tom: 'Too Young' to Play Billy Abbott Again?

David Tom
David Tom
David Tom returned to The Young and the Restless in February as Billy Abbott, a role for which he won an Emmy Award in 2000. Now he is being replaced by Burgess Jenkins as Billy, in a move that was a surprise to Tom.

"I think I was definitely well-liked there," Tom told CBS Soaps in Depth. "As far as I knew, nobody knew about this. Not even the cast." Was he given a reason for his termination? "One of the reasons they said they let me go is that I obviously looked too young when they placed me with [the new] Kelly. Well, she was hired after I was. I don't understand why they didn't think about that [when they were casting her]. We don't really have a storyline [anyway]; She's with Jack. I thought I looked fine with Missy [Claire Egan, Chelsea]. I really loved working with her."

Despite his unexpected exit, Tom is grateful for his return trip to Genoa City.

"It was such a great experience to have been a part of the Y&R family again," Tom added. "It was wonderful to see so many old friends and people I know that I used to work with and enjoy so much like Jess Walton (Jill) and Peter Bergman (Jack). I got to do some scenes with Eric Braeden (Victor), finally."

<!- more -->Queer as Folk brought to light the lives, careers, loves and ambitions of a group of young gay men and lesbians living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was not West Hollywood, nor the Castro, nor Chelsea. The series was an unapologetic celebration of a slice of gay life, but featured universal themes. It may have been a small world - a gay Main Street with a couple of bars, a disco, a few shops and a diner - but it resonated with all of us. During its five-year run, its series regulars included Michelle Clunie, Robert Gant, Thea Gill, Gale Harold, Randy Harrison, Scott Lowell, Peter Paige, Hal Sparks and Sharon Gless. Based on the British series created by Russell T. Davies, Queer as Folk was developed for American television by Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman.

The L Word followed a group of friends - both gay and straight - through stories of career, family, struggles, friendship and romantic relationships. The intimate stories about the lives and loves of lesbian couples and their friends in Los Angeles, starred Jennifer Beals, Laurel Holloman, Mia Kirshner, Katherine Moennig, Erin Daniels, Leisha Hailey, Sarah Shahi, Rachel Shelley and Pam Grier as its series regulars over the course its six-year run. The L Word was created by Ilene Chaiken and Kathy Greenberg and Michele Abbott.

'The Young and Restless' Casting Carousel Continues (Gina Tognoni & Burgess Jenkins In, David Tom Out): Why David Tom Deserved a Better Chance at Success

What a week this has been for The Young and the Restless fans. Before anyone had a chance to digest the news that Gina Tognoni had been cast as a younger Phyllis Summers, David Tom had been fired from his role as Billy Abbott. Three and a half months after Tom replaced Billy Miller, the role was recast again, with Burgess Jenkins.

Y&R wanted to take the character in a different direction. If you've watched soaps as long as many viewers have, you've heard that old chestnut time and again.

David Tom played Billy as a young adult from 1999-2002, winning a Daytime Emmy Award in 2000. He was very popular in the role and his departure was a blow to the show. Ryan Brown replaced Tom as Billy from 2002-2003 but never quite caught on. The character was brought back in 2006, played by Scott Seymour, but he was let go after 3 months. In 2008, Billy Miller landed the role and, as with many soap characters played by the same actor for several years, the writers began to incorporate Miller's personality into the character. By the time Miller's departure was announced in 2013, he had won two Daytime Emmys for his work and become a favorite among fans. The Billy Abbott that David Tom returned to was a drastically different character than the one he played so brilliantly before.

* How did NBC finished the season at No. 1? An especially strong fall for NBC led right into the network's pricey (but profitable) coverage of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. By the time the May sweep rolled around, a NBC victory in the key demographic of adults 18-49 was long assured -- leaving the rest of the Big Four to spin what has otherwise proved to be a disappointing year.

* Law enforcement sources told the Los Angeles Times that The Shield actor Michael Jace confessed to fatally shooting his wife, April, multiple times around 8:30 p.m. Monday at their home in the 5400 block of Brynhurst Avenue.

* Amir Arison, who recurred on The Blacklist's first season as the slightly awkward and witty FBI technician, is being promoted to series regular for Season 2.

* House of Cards is casting multiple roles, including an NSA director, senators and reporters for Season 3.

* A popular webseries made in Vancouver, WA is heading to the big screen. The Weinstein Co. has offered the creators of The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, a popular web series about a 16-year-old girl living in a "haunted house" in Washington state, a deal that will create a new movie and book series.

* Former Walking Dead showrunner Glen Mazzara is developing a follow-up to the 1976 horror classic Omen for Lifetime. Titled Damien, the drama centers on the film's young boy Damien Thorn. Now an adult and haunted by his past, Damien is faced with a series of macabre events and must finally face his true destiny: he is the Antichrist.

Huge revelations coming up this week on General Hospital. Watch a new promo below:

Mariah Copeland: An Unseen 'Young and the Restless' Character Is Suddenly Part of Three Storylines

Mariah Copeland is young, and certainly restless, but at what point did the writers of The Young and the Restless decide to make Mariah and Fake Cassie one in the same?  Was this a brilliant plan from the very beginning?  Viewers have been debating that question online ever since it was revealed that the character Camryn Grimes has been playing the past several months (FauxCassie, FakeCassie, doppelCassie), the one getting paid by Victor Newman to torment Sharon because she looks just like Sharon's dead daughter, is also the stalker ex-fiancee of Tyler Michaelson (Redaric Williams).

Not only is Mariah a dead ringer for the late Cassie Newman (also played by Grimes) but, according Tyler and and his sister, Leslie (Angell Conwell), she is similar in some way to Lily Winters Ashby (Chritel Khalil) as well.  In 2013 Y&R developed a bad habit of talking about characters that never actually appeared, or appeared much later.  It wasn't clear for a while if Mariah was actually ever going to show up.
