I finally heard back from Cheeks this evening. The big obstacle has been Ted Harbert who really wants to move to low cost info/talk shows instead of DOOL after next season. Despite this (and Harbert’s objection), NBC will agree to two more years of DOOL at $775K next season and $750K the following season, provided we go up from our current proposal of $4.25m to settle the Community issue to $4.50m. How do you feel about $4.50m? Given Harbert’s strong push for alternative programming after the next season, I think we’re better off locking in 2 years of DOOL now and paying the additional $250K.

Steve, here’s the financial impact if we were to agree to what NBC is proposing with the 2nd year pickup on Days, but the reduction in license fees.

Based on the current scenario ($4.25m) payment to NBC, and 2 season pickup for Days at $750k and $725k license fee (vs current fee of $775k), the total profit impact to SPT is ($4.1m) ebit. The impact would be realized over the next four fiscal years. Approx ($1m) impacting each year as indicated below:

FY14 - $1m (payment to NBC)

FY15 - $1.5m ($1m- payment to NBC, $500k – lower license fee on Days)

FY16 - $1.1m (all lower license fee on Days)

Fy17 - $500k (all lower

The 50th anniversary of Days is November 2015. A one year pickup takes us to September 2015. A two year pickup would include the 50th. This date has been triple checked.

Fantastic. What’s bringing in the female teens? The gay love story? I’m not kidding – with QUEER AS FOLK our most rabid audience for that show was young women and teens.

Y&R time periods

Steve, I checked with William Liu and his team as to whether Y&R airs at 6pm ET (or related time periods in time zones across the country), and you’re right. If CBS gave TVGN the right to air the show at 6pm, it wouldn’t conflict with any station’s airing. As Chris may have explained, TVGN will likely not air Y&R at 6pm, but with the right to air it then, we can legitimately put Days Of Our Lives there. That’s where TVGN would like to air it. I connected with my TVGN clients again yesterday, and I should be hearing back (hopefully with an offer) at the end of next week. I’ll keep you posted, and if they come through with an offer, it would be great if you would make the call to CBS. Many thanks, Flory

The Complete Story of 'The Doctors' (1963-1973)

Daytime TV covered the world of soap operas for decades before finally folding in the 1990s. In the mid-70s, the magazine did an excellent series titled "The Complete Story of..." recounting the history of a soap opera from its inception. Below is the historical feature on the first 10 years of NBC's The Doctors (1963-1973), which is currently being aired on Retro TV. Some of the interesting tidbits include: * The Doctors did not start as a serial; it began as a "half-hour anthology series of medical dramas, set in the large metropolitan Hope Memorial Hospital, and with the four principals alternating daily in the lead role, according to NBC's original announcement. The roles were Dr. William Scott (played by Jock Gaynor), Dr. Jerry Chandler (portrayed by Richard Roat), Dr. Elizabeth Hayes (played by Margot Moser) and Rev. Samuel Shafer, a hospital chaplain (played by Fred J. Scollay). * Later in the first season, Herb Kenwith and Paul Lammers became
