Roger, I read the boards regularly but rarely, if ever post. I may just join in the conversations. I have a lot of respect for you, your opinions, and how you express them. There's an air of professionalism as well as open mindedness in your words. I may hear a perspective, but I don't hear an ugly criticism of opposing thought. Your perceptions of SF/Peapack were were informative. I'm glad the actors were open to talking to you, and the essence of the Divine Ms Z came through, loud and clear. I have great fear that GL is not long for the airwaves, but there's a small piece of me that believes it just might survive. There's much work to be done by EW and the crew, IF they want the show to survive. I guess only time will tell. It seems simplistic to say, but "it's the writing stupid!" is the recipe for success. Forget sets, forget makeup and wardrobe. If the stories aren't there, people won't tune in. It really is that simple. |

I get the sense they hear that a lot - "why not just write good stories". I would be very curious to see if any other soap EP could have pulled off what Wheeler has in the past year. The show had to tape ahead while new sets were being built in the studio and the budget completely slashed. She didn't have the luxury of perfecting the more cost effective production model so they just had to roll it out with some bugs still there. Everyone - crew, producers, actors - had to do this all on national TV and get slammed for it. There really wasn't another way. I can't imagine all that pressure and then producing a show day after day. In the end, you are right, you have to tell compelling stories that will make people want to tune in. But from everything I heard it seems like every person is keenly aware of the issues in the production, the writing and the whole shebang and have taken steps to correct that. I have always loved Wheeler as an actress but she made a believer out of me as a miracle working producer as well. I couldn't believe how tirelessly she works. I hope she gets another year to really perfect all this and the four headwriters have more time to get into a groove. Jill Lorie Hurst felt that was starting to happen so I hope so. I would be very sad to see this show go off the air. |
