This is quite an informative article about mini-transplants, also called bone marrow transplant-lite. You can skim a lot of it, as it goes into the difference between regular transplants and the minis, but I was surprised to see that the mini really does exist, so that despite how much I hate the poorly written storyline of Johnny and his transplant, the show apparently does have medical advisors who do a little something... http://www.bmtinfonet.org/newsletters/issue47/mini.html
