I caught Friday's episode of GL, where Natalia aborted her wedding to Frank and ran out of the church, and in a scene in a gazebo in the snow, admitted to Olivia that she loved her. Nicely done scenes, yadda yadda, but I absolutely hate this storyline, and here's why.... to me, it's absolute disrespect to longtime viewers of show. How can tiic take people, and here I'm talking mainly about Olivia, who's been with GL longer, and completely change their sexual orientation like GL did? Not that it couldn't and doesn't happen IRL. That's not my point. I compare it to having tiic at ATWT take somebody like, oh, say, Carly and Emily and making them Cemily or something. If I were a staunch fan of GL I'd be screaming, "Leave OUR characters alone! Introduce gay or bi-sexual couples, but don't take characters who we have grown to know and love over time, and completely spin them.... But then, that would be too much to expect from the people behind a soap that's being cancelled, wouldn't it?

Otalia has exploded onto the scene and a lot of fans seem to love it. They have been buidling this story since early 2008. Not sure if you've been watching every day since it started, but it makes complete sense in the context of how they slowly told it. Olivia has never said she doesn't like men or having sex with men or is gay. She has just said she has totally unexpectedly fallen in love with Natalia, who has made her feel things none of her many husbands ever did. The audience has been allowed to see her journey in a slow build storyline the likes of which we haven't seen on soaps in probably decades. ATWT tells two week storylines and is the antithesis of this. A lot of people come out later in life or realize they have certain feelings they either didn't want to admit or didn't even realize. No one is more surprised by this than Olivia and Crystal Chappell has nailed it every time. I just think this is the best thing by far on any soap right now. The writing has been brilliant, and we all know we can't say that too often about daytime soaps these days. Instead of over the top craziness, it's real human emotion. If GL does not get picked up by another network, Olivia and Natalia are probably two characters P&G will bring over to ATWT (that's just my speculation). Their fan board has 3000 members in just a couple of months and 99.9% of them are women 18-49 (the dream demo). I don't see how P&G could not try to take advantage of that. As for Natalia, she was only with one man really her whole life until Frank came along. She slept with him once out of guilt/sympathy and hated it. And I love Doris's role in this as senior lesbian/adviser to Olivia. |

Well, you and I are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one, Roger. Yes, I have been watching the buildup and as I said, I agree that IRL people discover their sexuality is different, later in life, but I still hate the storyline and stick by my opinion that it's just another stupid and disrespectful move by the people behind the scenes.

Olivia told Doris she still finds men attractive. I just see it as a beautiful love story between two people. Oh well, it's not like we haven't disagreed before. LOL |
