The death of Dr. Marion Clark on Tuesday dealt a blow to the local arts scene he helped create. Clark, a founder of the Southwest Washington Symphony and former local urologist, was 93. Besides being a talented cellist, trombonist and French horn player, Clark also was a talented wood craftsman and could make musical instruments, including violas and chime mallets. He performed for the Lower Columbia College Symphonic Band and the SW Washington Symphony, from which he retired last year. "Music is my golfing and boating," he told The Daily News in 1985. "We talk about stress, and we talk about burnout. These diversions have been my way of dealing with those factors." After graduating from medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, he moved with his wife, Ruth, to Longview in 1953 and opened his urology practice, which he retired from in 1985. Clark's percussionist fell ill, and he needed a replacement. One call to Walworth later and his orchestra was complete. "I rushed in, and I saw all these instruments laying around," Walworth said. "I was hanging on for dear life, but I followed him and away we went." Local music teacher Kurt Harbaugh had a similar experience with Clark. One night, Clark called Harbaugh to start up a Dixieland band. "He says, 'I know it's last minute, but I want to put a Dixieland band together, and I want to play a function. And I thought of you! You in?' " Harbaugh remembered. "It wasn't about a million rehearsals. It was just about let's have fun and play together." Symphony board vice president Sharon Floyd said Clark is the reason she still plays the piccolo. She met Clark for the first time nflshop.com in the 1980s when she was repairing musical instruments in Longview. "He had a magnetic personality," she said. "It was just very inspirational that into his 90s he was still playing in the orchestra." Like Floyd, Davis hopes to follow in Clark's footsteps.
