There are a large number of rumors out there that GL is being cancelled & that there is a potential to bring on characters from GL to ATWT. Haven't watched GL in years but my wife does. The speculation is spreading & just curious if anyone here has a better handle on this than other sites?

On a personal level merging characters from other established soaps can work but often doesn't.

I've seen articles speculating that it could be canceled as early as September. TVWeek has reported that CBS is in fact looking for replacements for the time slot. It's not sounding good.

I have also heard rumors that they might bring some characters from GL over to ATWT. I don't see that happening without losing some from ATWT. As you said Marty, sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't. However I wouldn't be surprised to learn that some that signed more recent contracts with GL had a clause put in that would take them to ATWT if GL was canceled.

I do remember when AW was canceled that Tom Eplin's contract stipulated he would be paid in full if the event of cancellation happened. So the higher powers that be at P+G brought Jake to ATWT to fill out his contract.
Ciao!

REVA in Oakdale?? GL is one of my least favorite soap operas...and the only times I watch GL is by accident when I am switching channels....or when I use to tape 1hr2min...thus picking up the beginning of the soap too many times.

I did not read the cancellation notice but if REVA did come to Oakdale...I just wonder who would kill her first.

Has there ever been any shared storylines between GL and ATWT??

And just to soften this post....I did enjoy when AW came over to ATWT.

Things are tough enough on ATWT do we really need Reva in Oakdale? There are a few actors that i do like on GL & a few on ATWT that I can do without. I still think this is a bad omen for soaps in general. Maybe this will kick JP & CG in the ass & wake them up that this continued crap they've been giving us is just not working.

I'm not going to miss GL, and can understand it being cancelled, due to the abysmal ratings, but it makes me decidedly nervous about ATWT. :hmm

That's very sad. :cry GL was my favorite soap for many years. Unfortunately, they really let it go down with bad writing, but lately, it's really improved. I see ATWT taking a similar road lately. :cry

Here is the press release:

Guiding Light Era Concludes in September

Show Celebrates 72-Year History of Drama and Broadcast Innovation

NEW YORK April 1, 2009 /PRNewswire/ -- Guiding Light, the longest running show in broadcast history, will complete its final season on the CBS Television Network in September. The daytime drama was not renewed by CBS for the 2009/2010 broadcast season, marking the end of its 57 year run on the Network.

Over the years, GL has been on the forefront of innovation in both use of technology and groundbreaking storytelling. GL launched the careers of several Hollywood personalities, dramatized relevant social issues and has been awarded numerous accolades, including an unprecedented 69 Daytime Emmy awards.

"Being on the air for more than seven decades is truly remarkable, and it will be difficult for all of us at the show to say goodbye," said
Executive Producer Ellen Wheeler. "I'm proud of everything we've been able to do, including outstanding storytelling, our community service around the country with Find Your Light and the launch of our new production model. This show has such a rich history, wonderful fans, and I'm honored to have been a part of the GL legacy."

Guiding Light has led daytime and prime-time drama programming in covering a range of topical and timeless issues. The show ramatized important social issues such as discrimination against women in the 1940s and teen alcoholism and drug abuse in the 1980s. The show has also raised awareness about the effects of real-life medical conditions such as uterine cancer, postpartum depression, AIDS, Down syndrome, leukemia and breast cancer.

"We are honored to have been welcomed into the homes of multiple generations of Guiding Light viewers," said Brian T. Cahill, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, TeleNext Media, Inc. "We are working hard to find the show a new home, and we are exploring all our options to continue to bring loyal fans the characters and stories they love."

Guiding Light debuted as a 15-minute radio show in 1937 and made the move to television in 1952. The show began broadcasting in color in the spring of 1967, expanded to 30 minutes the following year and to a full hour in 1977. Guiding Light was the first show to introduce leading African-American characters into a soap opera in 1966. GL was the first daytime drama to podcast audio only shows in 2005. In 2008, the show revolutionized its entire production model, representing an end-to-end transformation in the way the show is created, from direction to editing to scenic design. This new innovation enabled the show to be completely portable, changing the face of daytime.

The fictional town of Springfield has been home to some of today's biggest names in daytime, including six-time Emmy award winner Justin Deas and four-time Emmy award winner Kim Zimmer. On Guiding Light, audiences also got their first look at many now-famous faces, such as Kevin Bacon, Calista Flockhart, Allison Janney, James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Taye Diggs, Hayden Panettiere and Brittany Snow, to name a few.

About Guiding Light

Guiding Light tapes at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York, NY and Peapack, New Jersey. The show can be seen weekdays on the CBS Television Network. (Check local listings.) For more information, visit http://www.guidinglight.net.

Do you think this a real possibility?

I know Passions aired for a while on DirectTV after it was cancelled by NBC, but I think if they find "a new home" for GL it would have much more of a chance on some channel that's readily available to more cable subscribers. As much as I love GL, I wouldn't change my provider to DirectTV just to get it, and I don't think a lot of other people would either.

P&G hasn't given up. Fans are already working on campaigns that will be announced shortly.

As for characters moving over to ATWT if nothing can be worked out, I doubt it. But I would think GL would want to keep "Otalia" alive who have a huge fanbase of mostly women 18-49 that advertisers love.

GL is better than ATWT right now creatively. I would love to see ATWT turn things around like GL has the past few months.

I doubt DirectTV would be a viable option. It would make more sense for somebody like SoapNet to do it and have it as original programming and really give people a reason to watch it because it doesn't air anywhere else. I've also heard rumors that they were possibly looking into ways to do it on the internet. I just question if they have enough forward thinkers to be ready to do that. More and more people watch TV shows over the internet and companies need to think about how to make that kind of programming viable. Right now however I can't imagine how they would do it without substantial cuts in the cast and productions costs. It seems that would have been something they needed to work on long ago. I'd love if they could find a way to pull it off as it would make me more optimistic about the future of ATWT which is my real concern at this point.

I too have heard talk of them bringing Otalia and Bill/Lizzie to ATWT.

I wonder if tptb at ATWT would welcome Ellen Wheeler to the team. She is a good director and would even be a good choice as new head writer. :fingers
